Diaper dermatitis: a rash in a child and how to treat it?

No matter how hard the mother takes care of the skin of the newborn, sooner or later the child may appear rashes and irritation on the skin, which is called diaper dermatitis. This skin disease can bring a lot of discomfort to the baby and spoil the mood of mom. Why does diaper dermatitis occur on the skin of a child, what are the main symptoms and how to treat it?

Diaper dermatitis: causes

Diaper dermatitis can occur in babies who still cannot control their physiological processes and spend most of their time in the diaper.

In the diaper, the child’s skin is not ventilated, moreover, it is often rubbed. In combination with aggressive factors such as sweat, feces and urine, a moist environment forms in the diaper. All this leads to a greenhouse effect – a favorable environment for the reproduction of bacteria.

Bacteria that are present in the feces release ammonia from urea. Thus, the natural pH changes on the baby’s skin. This can cause alkalization, inflammation and irritation on the baby’s skin.

Symptoms of diaper dermatitis
Recognizing the symptoms of diaper dermatitis is easy. To do this, look at the affected areas that come in contact with the stimulus. Usually this is the entire area that is in the diaper and next to it: the inguinal zone, hips, lower back and lower legs. Most often, this skin disease develops in a certain order.

Diaper dermatitis begins with redness and peeling on the skin.
Then small pimples and red bubbles appear on the body. The skin begins to swell.
The next symptom is manifested with an extreme degree of diaper dermatitis – weeping, crusting and rarely erosion.
Sometimes itching and pain are added to skin inflammation. In such cases, the child is restless and may not sleep well.
Prevention of skin inflammation
In order not to bring the skin condition of the baby to dermatitis, follow some rules:

It is necessary to wash the child after each act of defecation.
Arrange baby bath skin after washing. The time of such air procedures depends on the age of the child and the temperature in the room.
Change the diaper at most every 2-2.5 hours.

If this skin condition is not treated, it can lead to the appearance of fungal or bacterial flora.

Diaper dermatitis is not an allergic disease. Therefore, you do not need to give your child any antihistamines.

The treatment of diaper dermatitis can be divided into two stages: drying the skin and its protection and healing of the wounds that have appeared.

Before applying therapeutic ointments, it is necessary to clean the damaged area of the skin. For this, you can use a decoction of chamomile. Take two bags of chamomile (sold at the pharmacy) and brew boiled water in a glass. Let it brew for about half an hour. Dilute the broth in a liter of water. With this solution, you can wash your child or simply wipe with a cotton pad.

Drying and protecting the skin
Ointments and creams can help with this, based on zinc, for example, zinc ointment, Tsindol, Desitin. It is also worth remembering that many diaper creams are also made on the basis of zinc. These drugs will help to form a protective layer on the skin and reduce the effect of the irritating factor. They also help to dry the skin.

Wound healing
For wound healing, use ointments and creams that contain dexpanthenol, for example D-panthenol or Bipanten. They have an anti-inflammatory effect, and also stimulate the skin on the formation of epithelium in places of damage. I recommend using them after the active inflammation has passed and the healing phase has begun.

Fixed chlorhexine and dexpanthenol formulations, such as Depantenol or Bipanten Plus. They have an antiseptic effect.

Do I need to call a doctor?
Call a doctor at home with the following symptoms:

The child’s body temperature rose to 38.5 degrees on the background of skin inflammation.
Rashes on the body will last more than 3 days.
The rash is spreading. The affected area of the skin increases, becomes swollen and it appears a crimson hue.
Abscesses appear.
