Among the methods of combating cough, there are many folk remedies that are not so harmful to the child’s body, and sometimes even more effective. However, if used improperly, they will not only not be useful, but can also lead to serious side effects. In this article we will analyze folk remedies for cough from plant and animal products, and also consider recipes for their preparation, which can be used both for children and adults. The folk methods were commented on by our experts, pediatricians Yaroslav Matveev, Erdyn Baldanov and Alain Gritsay.

The best folk remedies for cough

1. Radish
For a long time, our grandmothers, when coughing, made syrup from radish. This folk remedy copes with a dry cough. Its special advantage is ease of preparation, as well as a rather pleasant taste that a child will like.

Radish Cough Syrup Prescription
We will need:

radish;
honey or sugar.
Take a medium-sized fruit and cut off the “cap” on the side of the tail.
Cut a hole inside the radish so that your radish becomes like a cup.
In a radish, put 1-2 teaspoons of honey or sugar. Please note that the radish should not be  with honey. Juice will be allocated from it, which will also need a place in the hole. Therefore, the radish should be filled with about 1/2 honey.
Cover with a “cap” and leave the radish at room temperature for about 8-10 hours. Therefore, it is better to prepare syrup for the night, so that in the morning it is ready.
Syrup is taken in a teaspoon every hour. However, you should be careful with the child and give the first servings of the alternative medicine drop by drop, and then watch him for allergic reactions. It is better to coordinate this prescription with your doctor before use. Some recommend replacing honey with sugar to avoid allergies.

Doctor’s comment:
Radish and other “bitterness” provoke a cough center, due to this the child clears his throat more. However, with such recipes it is important to comply with the dosage. The cough center is also responsible for the gag reflex. And if you overdose, you can cause the child to vomit, and not cough.

Contraindications:
allergy to syrup components;
age up to 2 years;
gastritis with high acidity or an ulcer;
acute pancreatitis;
post-infarction condition.
2. Ginger
Ginger is an effective remedy that has an anti-inflammatory property. However, this root is a rather powerful remedy, which is contraindicated to some or permissible only in small doses. Consider the “soft” cough recipes.

Ginger Tea
We will need:

ginger root;
water;
lemon;
honey.
Take ginger root and peel it, then chop non-thin strips. Pour boiling water over it.
Add sugar or honey if you or your child are not allergic to these components.
Leave the infused drink for 15-20 minutes.
Drink 2-3 times a day for 100 ml. For a child, it is better to dilute the drink with warm water so that it is less concentrated. At the first dose, monitor the reaction of the child’s body to this spice. If you suspect an allergy, ginger should be excluded from the diet.

gastrointestinal problems, gastritis, ulcer;
hepatitis;
heart disease
frequent bleeding;
fever; fever;
sleep disturbances.
Doctor’s comment:
Of my home cough control methods, I will single out herbal remedies, namely tea with thyme. It has anti-inflammatory properties, and also helps to cope with cough.

3. Milk
Warm milk is probably the most popular and beloved cough suppressant. A sweetened creamy drink really helps with an infectious cough and even with an allergic one.

Milk with Honey and Egg
We will need:

milk – 1 cup;
butter – 1 tbsp;
honey – 1 tbsp;
egg yolk;
* 5% iodine.
Boil the milk and pour it into a glass. Add a tablespoon of oil inside and then a tablespoon of honey. The classic recipe strongly recommends that you mix the ingredients.
At the tip of the knife we ​​take soda and also add to the drink, mix.
Stir the yolk of one egg and add to the milk.
Add two drops of iodine 5% with a pipette. We recommend that this ingredient in the prescription be consulted with your doctor or better discard it. It can be harmful to small children!
Drink it warm. Children are recommended to use only half a glass, and adults – a glass. Such a drink will benefit without the addition of iodine. Therefore, to use this ingredient or not is at your discretion.

Doctor’s comment:
I don’t see any reason to add an egg yolk to this recipe, since we can additionally provoke an allergy. Here, the active substance is milk, which increases the amount of sputum. Cough goes from dry to wet, and it makes it easier for a child to cough.
