Acetone in the urine of a child. Why is there a smell of acetone from the mouth in children

It doesn’t matter if acetone is found in the child’s urine or if it smells from the mouth – all this is called acetone syndrome. As a rule, the condition occurs in childhood. Usually people call it “acetone in children”, to simplify the concept. If the mother was told that the child in the urine had acetone or she felt a corresponding smell from her mouth, this does not mean that the child was poisoned or got to acetone. This experience is often the case with mothers of young children, because they are not always able to keep track of. In fact, the causes are in the internal processes of the body.

Acetonemic syndrome in children

This diagnosis means a list of symptoms that causes an increased concentration of ketone bodies in the blood. There are several theories why these bodies can increase in the blood: a drop in glucose or a violation of the regulation of glucose metabolism. But this does not mean that deterioration immediately sets in, it only occurs with provocative factors. Acetonemic syndrome can be caused by a violation of the diet, for example, if the child has large breaks between meals. Also, acetonemic syndrome can develop against a background of somatic, infectious or endocrine diseases, occurs in central nervous system tumors. It can appear after a recent surgery, for example, after removal of the tonsils.

In some cases, “acetone in children” can occur against the background of diabetes mellitus. In this case, you need to adhere to a completely different treatment system. It should be developed specifically for the child by an endocrinologist.

Acetonemic syndrome is most often observed in 4-6% of children aged 1 year to 13 years. However, it is more common in girls than in boys.

If the child develops cyclic acetonemic vomiting, then this condition can last 5 years. This does not mean that the child will feel sick every day, but the episodes will be repeated. In 90% of cases of crisis, repeated indomitable vomiting occurs.

Treatment of indomitable vomiting, as well as severe cases of acetone syndrome, takes place in a hospital. Doctors restore the level of glucose in the body of the child and the water-alkaline balance.

Symptoms of Acetonemic Syndrome
To find out that a child has acetone according to the results of urine analysis. But there are other signs of the condition by which you can identify the problem. Please note that almost all symptoms can relate to other ailments, so a doctor can make an accurate diagnosis based on laboratory tests. Do not make hasty conclusions or self-medicate.

In the lungs, the initial stages can be observed:

lethargy, weakness. The child prefers only to sit or lie down;
the appearance of dark circles under the eyes;
naughty;
complains that his head hurts;
eats less or refuses food.
If the condition worsens:

smell of acetone from the mouth;
nausea, vomiting;
diarrhea.
Vomiting and nausea must be stopped, but done correctly after consulting a doctor. If you ignore the problem, then the child will be dehydrated, which leads to death. It is necessary to consult a specialist, describing the previous condition of the child, so that the doctor can compare what is associated with vomiting.

Acetone in the urine of a child
Acetone in my child appears for the same reason – acetonemic syndrome. It is necessary to find out the reason why he could have been provoked. Your doctor may order a diabetes test to rule out or confirm it. For a child who has found acetone in the urine, a special diet can be prescribed. As a rule, it is recommended if there was vomiting. In other cases, sweet drinks, fruit drinks, fruit drinks, juices, sweet teas, including chilled ones, will help. Of course, if you use them in large volumes, to maintain the condition, then this can lead to weight gain. Therefore, it is important to play sports.

The smell of acetone from the child’s mouth

If you smell acetone from a child’s mouth, then ask him if he has headaches or nausea. In the near future, you need to pass a general urine test and discuss the situation with the doctor. It is impossible to cure the smell of acetone in a child, you can only adjust his condition to ease it. First of all, you need to raise the level of glucose. We give the child sweets rich in glucose, pour sweet drinks, but not soda. Dr. Komarovsky recommends giving your child glucose, which you can buy in tablet form or as a solution.

If the baby smells acetone from the mouth, then give a teaspoon of drink every 5 minutes. If the child’s acetone smell is older, then we give 1-2 tablespoons with an interval of 5 minutes.

It would be better if you put an enema with soda. It is easy to prepare the solution – 1 cup of warm water and 1 tsp. baking soda. Keep Rehydron in your home pharmacy for such cases. It is useful to restore the water-salt balance.

Intensive vomiting began: what to do
It happens that parents did not notice the smell of acetone, or did not have time to give more drink and sweets.
